It’s Spring: How did your roof handle the winter?
No matter what kind of roof you have, it will wear and eventually fail. Some roofs are rated for 10 years, 20…30…50 or even longer.
What kind of roof do you have?
No matter what kind of roof you have, you should look it over a few times a year, especially in the spring. Do it yourself roof inspections in Glens Falls, Lake George, Saratoga Springs or any place that experiences harsh winter conditions for that matter, are extremely important for the health of your home. What to look for:
- Lost or loose tiles
- Nails that are popping up
- Buckling plywood decking
- Damaged or missing slates
- Missing or shifted screws or nails on your metal roof
Check to see if water is ponding on any areas of your roof. Look for any punctures or other signs of damage. I’ve inspected many roofs where the owner isn’t even aware that there is damage. If you have had a hail storm, you should take an even closer look to see if the hail has caused any damage. It may not be leaking now, but hail can take years off of your roof and be an insurance claim.
Crawling onto your roof isn’t necessary for a quick roof examination. Use a ladder propped against the edge of your house or look from the ground with a pair of binoculars for any signs of damage. From the attic, you can also look for leaks, especially around your chimney.
